About

Looking at the world a little differently

Curiosity has been the common thread through my working life, my photography and my writing.

I am interested in places, how they came to be, how people have shaped them and what their future might hold. The question behind much of my work is simple: what can we understand if we look a little more carefully?

A career built on questions

For more than four decades, I have worked across environmental science, infrastructure, governance and international development in New Zealand and throughout the Pacific.

That work has taken me from remote island communities to major infrastructure projects. It has taught me that the most interesting questions rarely fit neatly within one discipline. Understanding them requires patience, evidence and a willingness to connect ideas.

Why I write and photograph

Writing and photography allow me to explore places from different directions. One provides context, history and explanation. The other preserves a moment, a landscape or a detail that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

My current book, Takapuna Beach: An Autobiography, brings those approaches together to tell the story of a familiar place through geology, people, memory and change.

What you’ll find here

This website brings together my books, photography and occasional reflections on the places and subjects that interest me.

The approach is consistent: observe carefully, follow the evidence, respect complexity and remain curious.
