The Book

For some time I've been thinking of writing a piece about perceptions of climate change and impacts in relation to day-to-day life. This blog outlines the broad theme of this written piece and some ideas about publication

As a theme I've selected "The Story of the Hauraki Gulf Through My Eyes: A Tale Told by Takapuna Beach"

The basic premise is as follows.

I am Takapuna Beach. My story is etched in the sands, cliffs, and waters you see today, beginning long before human feet touched my shores. I have stood here for eons, shaped by the relentless forces of fire, water, and time.

Firstly I briefly cover early human intervention for broad context, then let me take you back to my beginning, through the ages, to a world far different from now. To help illustrate the immensity of this timeline, imagine that the last 350 million years – the duration of my the story - unfolds over the course of one year.

In this metaphor, January 1st marks 350 million years ago, when the forces that would eventually shape my world first stirred. From there, each month represents roughly 30 million years, bringing this vast stretch of time into focus, moment by moment, season by season.

  • January and February usher in the heat of summer, with tectonic plates shifting and ancient oceans teeming with life—the fiery birth of my world.

  • Autumn arrives (March through May), bringing cooler winds as ancient forests emerge and life diversifies across the land and sea.

  • Winter’s chill (June through August) settles in during the age of dinosaurs, their colossal forms roaming a world in transformation, while icy conditions occasionally punctuate Earth’s climate.

  • Spring blooms (September through November), a season of renewal, marked by the rise of mammals and birds, as life recovers and flourishes after mass extinctions.

  • Finally, December represents the recent past, with humanity entering the scene in the final seconds of the last day of the year—mere moments before the clock strikes midnight.

This perspective places my story within the rhythms of the world we know, where the cycle of transformation remains constant. I invite you to see Takapuna Beach not just as a place, but as a living entity shaped by eons of time, and to marvel at your own fleeting moment in its epic tale."

Publication thoughts and more content to come.
